Hearing Tests
If you think you might have a hearing loss, call and schedule an appointment with our doctor of audiology, Jared Young. Regular hearing tests for people over the age of 50 are recommended every couple of years.
Testing is painless, comfortable and safe. It consists of answering questions about your hearing health, recognizing everyday words at different volume levels, and identifying different sounds. Your ability to hear each tone or frequency produces a unique hearing pattern which is recorded on an audiogram. The test is completed in a sound booth using earphones and bone conduction oscillator. The Audiologist then uses the audiogram to determine the type and severity of a hearing loss and know whether that loss should be treated medically or with hearing aids.
Tinnitus Evaluation
We offer several diagnostic tests for patients suffering with tinnitus (ringing in the ears), to determine the cause of the tinnitus and its psychological impact. Tests also determine if the cause is related to middle or inner ear problems as well as possible auditory nerve abnormalities. The tone or pitch of the tinnitus as well as its volume is also determined to help assess the best management option, including dietary changes, medication review, masking devices, hearing aids or Tinnitus Retraining therapy (TRT).
Hearing Aid Dispensing
All of our patients undergo a comprehensive hearing exam prior to receiving hearing aids to determine the cause and extent of the loss. A detailed case history is also completed. If a patient is a candidate for hearing aids, the styles and technology options that will work best for the patient are discussed. The patient chooses a hearing aid to try and the hearing aids are fit and programmed to match the unique hearing loss. At this point, each patient is given instruction on how to retrain the brain to listen for important sounds and ignore irrelevant noises. Patients are also instructed on how to use and care for the hearing aids. Follow up appointments will help the audiologist fine tune the patient’s desired settings. Once a patient finds a hearing aid that works best for them, a purchase agreement is signed and payment arrangements are made.
Hearing Aid Servicing
At Young Hearing, we want to make sure that your hearing aids are always working at their best. When you are initially fit with a new hearing aid, most patients require 3-4 follow up appointments to find the most comfortable fit and program settings. Subsequent hearing aid adjustments and cleanings are available for no charge for the first year. In most circumstances, patients can be seen within a day of calling about a problem. Also, patients are scheduled for checkups every 3-4 months to make sure the hearing aids and clean and functioning properly. If there is a mechanical problem with the hearing aid, we can send it in to the manufacturer for repair. There is no charge for this service if the device is still under warranty.
Ear Wax Removal
When people wear hearing aids or ear plugs, sometimes ear wax can build up in the ear canal and needs to be removed. Dr. Young is highly experienced in removing ear wax safely, whether it is loose in the canal or impacted against the ear drum. It is a good idea to have your ears cleaned quarterly to ensure that ear wax doesn’t impede your hearing or clog your hearing aids.
